The Social Rewind: Q Source's Look at the Most Interesting Social Media Posts of the Previous Week – September 23 to 27, 2013

Are you subscribed to multiple social media networks like we are? Do you find it difficult it to keep up with all of the updates from the people you follow? Do you feel like you’re missing a lot of good information? Introducing "The Social Rewind," a weekly blog digest of what we thought were the most interesting social media posts of the previous week. Q Source follows some really fascinating companies and individuals on Twitter, Facebook & Google+ and we want to share the best of what they have to say.

First off this week is an eye-opening post from TE Connectivity about the future of wireless electricity:

Next, we found ourselves trying to imagine 50 billion connected devices after reading this re-post from Zebra Technologies.

Agilent Technologies' post told about how their equipment was used in a research study about whales and their exposure to chemicals:

Weller Soldering presented a straight-forward image about the importance of safety precautions when soldering:

Our friends over at Workrite Ergonomics had us scared and standing upright after reading their piece about the "7 Ways Sitting Will Kill You:"

The folks over at MAKE Magazine showed off some cool photos of some old medical devices:

And, finally, we wish Google a Happy 15th Birthday:

As for our favorite post from our own social media updates, we shared this blog post about Q Source's participation, and fundraising efforts, in the 2013 Tunnel to Towers 5K Run/Walk:

So, there you have it. A quick look at a few of last week's most interesting social media posts. Please let us know what you think of this new blog column. And we'd love it if you shared other interesting blog posts with us. See you next week!

Q Source Team Running, Fundraising for the 2013 Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk

Great people inspire great actions. That's the underlying theme of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk.

Last year we told you about our Web Assistant (and volunteer firefighter), John Garland, and his inspired participation in the 2012 Tunnel to Towers event in New York City. This year, John has inspired the rest of us here at Q Source to join him as he once again follows in the footsteps of Stephen Siller's fateful journey on September 11, 2001. The Q Source team is running and fundraising for this great cause on September 29, 2013 and we need your assistance.

The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk is an event to honor NYC firefighter Stephen Siller and to raise money for the heroic firefighters, law enforcement, and military that have been seriously injured in the line of duty while serving our country. The 5K Run & Walk follows the path that Siller took while racing to the World Trade Center that day (upon reaching the Battery Tunnel, he found it to be closed and jammed with traffic so he grabbed his gear out of his truck and ran to the Twin Towers). Siller was lost later that day.

The money raised from the Tunnel to Towers event goes to help severely injured first responders and military personnel to get off waiting lists for assistance. Q Source believes it is important to recognize these heroes who make amazing sacrifices every day for our protection. That’s why we're asking for donations to help us reach the fundraising goals.

Please visit our online Q Source team page at the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk Web site to learn more about this event or to make a donation. With your help we can change for the better the lives of these selfless heroes. We thank you for your support and ask that you please spread this message around to your friends, family, and colleagues.

Choosing the Right Puritan Swab for Manufacturing and Industry Uses – Guest Blog

by Ashley L. McKusick, Vice President of Sales – Northeast, Puritan Medical Products

Our guest blogger from Puritan Medical Products provides our readers with some helpful facts about Puritan swabs and their specific applications.

Puritan Medical Products Co., LLC (Puritan), North America's largest manufacturer of specialty tipped, single-use products for critical environments (as well as for medical, diagnostic, forensic, and environmental surface sampling use), understands the importance of using the right swab for the job. After all, you can't do the right job if you don't have the right tools. To better help you make an educated choice, we present the following overview.

Puritan swabs and other products are used in labs around the world in industries such as healthcare, diagnostics, fiber optics, electronics, semiconductors, precision manufacturing and more. We manufacture all our critical environment products in an ISO 9001:2008 certified and CE-compliant facility to ensure quality control. Because many of our products are used in critical environments for manufacturing and industry it is even more important to select the right tool for the application.

Knitted Polyester Swabs

Our Knitted Polyester Swabs are non-abrasive, lint-free, and can easily stand up to IPA, acetone, and other solvents commonly used in cleanrooms and other critical environments. These swabs are also non-absorbent, have low particle generation, low NVRs (non-volatile residues), and good chemical resistance.

Made and vacuum packed in our Class 1,000 cleanroom, Puritan's knitted polyester swabs are ideal for cleaning electronic and communication devices and perfect for instrumentation and medical device manufacturing.

MicroFiber Swabs

If your application requires an absorbent swab that has low particle generation and low NVRs, yet is soft and non-abrasive, check out Puritan's microfiber line. Microfiber Swabs offer excellent wipe-dry characteristics and are safe to use on and around static-sensitive components. They're ideal for removing contaminants and excess materials in your critical environment. That’s why they're often used in manufacturing fiber-optic components.

Foam-Tipped Swabs

Foam Swabs come in many different configurations, including Puritan's PurSwab® foam-tipped applicators. These are good for removing epoxy residue from connectors, general cleaning or as a flux remover. Puritan's PurSwab applicators also have thermal edge seals and thermal bonding to the handle so the sponge-like foam picks- up unwanted particles without releasing any into your critical environment.

Specialty-Tipped Swabs

Puritan offers a variety of Specialty-Tipped Swabs for those times when you can't find the right swab for your needs – or, perhaps, you've found a way to boost productivity by using a swab that may not be mass produced. Specialty-tipped applicators come in a range of shapes, sizes, and materials. For example, Puritan's ESD swabs, which are designed for working in and around highly static-sensitive components and parts. Puritan also offers the Popule®, a self-saturating swab with a non-glass handle that can be filled with virtually any solution. The Popule is pre-filled and ready to use, offering you the convenience of a swab and solution in one.

About Puritan

Puritan is trusted worldwide for its U.S.-made, single-use products for the healthcare, diagnostic, forensic, critical environment, food safety, and drug manufacturing industries. All Puritan products are made at their state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Guilford, ME.

Using Brady's LINK360 Software for Confined Space Assessments and Permitting – Guest Blog

by Marlon Davis, Brady Software Business Lead, Brady Corporation

Our guest blogger from Brady writes about using the LINK360™ software application to address confined space assessments and permitting related to lockout/tagout standards.

Brady's LINK360 software allows you to
create & track confined space permits.
In many cases, mitigating lockout/tagout (LOTO) hazards involves preventing hazards introduced in confined spaces like atmospheric, engulfment or entrapment. Brady's LINK360 software (see box below for more information) helps customers further reduce the risk of injury or death by adding confined space to the LOTO and standard work instruction management already released.

What is a Permit-Required Confined Space?

A permit-required confined space is any space that fits the following criteria:
  1. Is large enough that an employee can enter and perform assigned work
  2. Has limited or restricted means for entry or exit (for example, tanks, vessels, silos, storage bins, hoppers, vaults, etc.)
  3. Is not designed for continuous employee occupancy

Importance of Confined Space Assessments and Permitting

Assessing the hazards that are contained within a confined space, and outlining how to mitigate them, will help improve safe human entry and temporary occupancy to perform work. The granting of permits is another safety protocol to ensure the proper processes are being followed to lessen the risk of injury or death.

Top 3 Customer Issues Addressed with LINK360 Software

The most common issues that LINK360 customers found solutions for include:
  1. Tracking changes and permitted work histories tied to confined spaces -- Assessment creation, printed permit scanning, or permit supervisor review can be handled online with LINK360 software, which is significantly quicker and easier to review and modify. A few of the reporting options include: Assessment due for audit, recently revised assessments, assessment history, assessment by location, permit forms due for audit, equipment reports, and permit history.
  2. Using, storing, and updating assessments -- Many are still using paper forms to perform assessments and storing them in drawers…where they are rarely used or updated. This is no longer an issue with LINK360 software because the entire process is created and stored online making it completely paperless and easy to update, store, or distribute.
  3. Paper documentation needs to include every option possible to be checked -- Errors when filling out a paper permit, like simply checking the wrong box, can create ambiguity and introduce safety hazards. The LINK360 Software confined space functionality helps forward the knowledge created from the assessment to inform the creation of the permit for entry. Permit options are then pre-filled or reduced based on the information designed by the assessment, reducing ambiguity. A photo at the top level of the assessment is also available to assist contractors and maintenance personnel to identify entry points and hazards.
BRADY LINK360 SOFTWARE AND GLOBAL CLIENT SERVICES SOLUTIONS
Brady's Link360 EH&S and Lean Software Platform
Brady launched its LINK360 software platform in August 2012. LINK360 gives managers a 360-degree view on all activities performed to create, use, and update equipment visuals at a single location or across many locations. Many of LINK360's EHS and Lean tools like reporting, auditing, document management, procedure standardization, and label and tag printing are means to an end. These tools help the user create a visual environment for operators, safety engineers, and maintenance personnel to link up procedural tasks with visuals that identify those points of interest with similar visual standards for easy shut downs, cleaning, inspections, maintenance, and many other tasks. In addition to the management of confined space assessments and permitting, it also offers lockout/tagout and operational reliability management.

Brady's Global Client Services
Brady also provides services to assist customers in the creation of their visual assessments through our global client services team. These services include: Visual lockout/tagout procedures, preventative maintenance procedures, and visual confined space procedures.
